WHY WAS FURKHUNDA BRUTALLY MURDERED?

A cultural scrutiny at the roots of such mob murders in Afghanistan

Afghanistan is a country which has experienced 35 years of war, a war which has intensified the problem of illiteracy and access to education and schools. Despite the fact that the western countries supported religious campaigns and activities to motivate Afghan people to fight against Russian which finally defeated the Russians and the Mujahidin succeeded, but the victory of Mujahidin made the Afghan people even more religious than before and the 7 years of the Taliban supported by Arabs and Pakistanis intensified the religious extremism and forced the illiterate generation grown in war to blindly follow the orders of illiterate Mullahs that finally resulted in paving the way for a human rights crisis in the country.

Now the foreign troops in Afghanistan are fighting with the results of the projects they funded 30 years ago in that region.

On 19th March 2015 there was a 27 year old Afghan girl covered with the Islamic Hijab who decided to go to Shah-e-Du Shamsheera (King with two swords) Shrine in Kabul. Shrine is a name for the tomb of those who are highly respected in the Islamic countries, the same as Saints in Christianity. People usually go to shrines to pray because it is believed that the soul and spirit of death cleric can do Shafaa-at (intercession or intermediation) for God so that God will forgive the sins of the sinner or to make the prayers of a prayer get accepted and approved by God. People usually burn candles and pray in the shrines, but there is the new young generation who says that such kind of belief, activities and practices are against Islam and should be prohibited.

Around these shrines, there are some illiterate people who pretend to be Mullahs. They don’t know anything about religion and most of them even can’t read and write neither in Dari nor in Arabic to read Quran while they all write their prescriptions in Arabic language. They are using the name of religion and introduce themselves as religious doctors or religious magicians who can treat any kind of diseases by prayers. They are making a real business on religion and they have opened shops for treatment of any kind of sicknesses through the religious prescriptions called “Taweez”. Their customers are mainly deprived uneducated women who lost some family members during the war or got kind of psychological problems and they come to seek the help of these people to see if they can find their missing family members or can get their health problems fixed by one of those prescriptions.

Such kind of religious doctors in Afghanistan have another name for all kinds of diseases and another way of treatment. For example epilepsy is called “Mergy” in Afghanistan but they call it “Gen Gereftagee” which means “stroke by the spook” or stroke by the invisible creatures or devils.

Farkhunda did not believe in all those things and she thought all those people who are doing those kinds of business on religion are somehow doing wrong things because they even try to treat those ladies who cannot get pregnant.

She stood against those superstitious religious doctors and said no to them and she began to ask people in that shrine not to go to those Mullahs and kept telling the people that those Mullahs were nothing but liars who take the money and do nothing for people except giving them some papers which do not help the customers with their problems.

She was in fact starting a campaign against a big business standing right at the center of that particular business’s market where all other people surrounding her were somehow related to that business and they were directly or indirectly receiving money from such kind of practices. Which means their lives and income was dependent on those Taweez businesses.

All those who were involved in Taweez business were afraid of what she was doing because she was practically decreasing the number of their customers by rejecting all their business and calling them liars.

Farkhunda was highly educated and highly talented girl graduated from 14 years of continuous study and she was looking for job as a teacher. She never thought of what might happen to her because she was in the capital city of Afghanistan and only 1 kilometer away from presidential palace and 100 meters from the police checkpoint where the armed polices were standing to pretend to save the life of people.

She thought that the shrine environment was not clean and it needed some sort of volunteer work to be cleaned. She asked the ladies who were there for a broom and cleaned the yard of the shrine and there were some papers in one corner of the yard. She took the papers and put them all in the nearby fireplace where some people wanted to boil some water.

Suddenly one of the Mullahs who thought that she might be harmful to his Taweez business shouted that she has burnt the Holy Quran in order to make Farkhunda afraid of such an accusation to force her to leave the shrine so that people would not listen to her anymore. Those Mullahs did not want to lose customers and they still wanted to encourage people to go to their shops to boost their businesses.

A number of hooligans who heard the Mullah shouting jumped inside the shrine and asked the girl “Why did you burn the Holy Quran?”

Burning a Quran is culturally known as the worst thing that can happen to Quran in Afghanistan which is also part of the superstition as a result of exaggeration in respect for the Holy book of Islam. When the usable life of a Quran ends in Afghanistan, people usually dig a grave for it and bury it in the ground or through it in the river to avoid burning it. These three kinds of practices are three different methods of dealing with the body of the death people or other sacred things in different religions before Islam.

According to the videos published on the social Medias, some of them were repeatedly asking her the same question and not listening to her answers anymore, they asked her why did she burn the Quran?
She said that she had not burnt the Holy Quran but nobody listened to her and nobody believed her. Some of them called that America has sent her here to burn our Holy Quran. We should kill her. She says in that video “damn you and your America, I didn’t burn any Quran” she continued “I just burnt some other papers which were inside the yard”. They started to beat her. Vandalism is a common practice in Afghanistan. They took her purse and stole her mobile phone and shouted “Allah-o-Akbar” which means “God is great” and all the people started to beat her. She was shouting as much as she could that she has not done anything wrong but nobody listened to her.

The police arrived from 100 meters away and fired guns randomly on the sky and saved her for a while and asked what the main problem was. The hooligans continued vandalism and still continued to attack her despite the presence of the police. The hooligans were crying like those people who are addicted to drugs but could not find drugs for a long while, or as if Farkhunda had just murdered their parents and those hooligans were around 30 to 40 people attacking from different sides at a vulnerable girl who was beaten by all of them once and could hardly walk.

The police also thought that she might have burnt the Quran and that is why they did not do their best to save her. They could put her in a car and take her away from the angry crowd maybe to her house to protect her, but they did not do that. It was possible for the police to save her from the madding angry crowd of stupid street hooligans. But the police showed some soft corner for those criminals and felt sympathy for the criminals rather than feeling sympathy for the real victim. They somehow permitted the angry crowd of hooligans reach her once again and then they did not do anything and just stood there and watched how she dies among a bunch of stupid people who did not know what they were doing. They kicked her, they beat her by the stones, by sticks and wood planks and anything they could find for 2 continuous hours and put her body under the tire of a car and then burnt her body brutally and they all thought that they were doing a very good thing. It is a great pity that there was not a single good person among those involved to ask the people to stop killing an innocent girl. People were contributing their handkerchiefs and Pattoos to make a bigger fire inside a dirty dry river to make her death body burn in a better way.

Some other guys, instead of helping the poor girl, started to film the scene by their mobile phone cameras.

Immediately after this tragedy, the head of the police goes to the girl’s parents and asks them to announce to the media that their daughter was mentally ill and move out of that city forever; otherwise they all will get murdered. They announced that she was mentally ill and parents also thought that their daughter might have burnt the Quran and that is the only way to justify why she did burn the Quran.

Some Mullahs as well as the minister of Haj condemned immediately the burning of Quran and admired the murder of the innocent girl.

The police started investigations after her dead and found out that she was innocent and she did not burn the Holy Quran.

The social media and Facebook put a lot of pressure on the government. The news spread all over the world in just a few minutes. Many people started to condemn the murder and condemned those who admired the murder. All these social media pressure and campaigns put some Mullahs into a very dangerous status. Deputy Minister of Ministry of Culture and Information who was a lady was immediately fired from her work due to strong social media campaigns against her because she also admired her murder. Civil society organizations and women rights activists inside Afghanistan demonstrated strongly all over Afghanistan. Men, women, boys and children stood against this cruel and brutal murder and all of them went to streets for demonstrations in different provinces of Afghanistan as well as Afghan refugees in different countries of the world expressed their hatreds towards those criminals and those who admired such brutal attacks. It was almost the biggest revolution in the minds of the Afghan people. Many of them said bad things to religion on the social media pages and many Afghans burnt Quran intentionally and put the videos on the Facebook. Many others turned their faces to Islam and said no to religion and many others condemned superstitions intertwined with the religion and asked for reforms in religious practices and many others harshly criticized Taweez and business under the name of religion. Many people published videos of Mullahs who are writing Taweez and made fun of them and many others interviewed such people who were writing Taweez and showed their real face and their level of knowledge and understanding of religious issues and the uselessness of their work. The funeral of Farkhunda was carried out by women in Afghanistan which is not a common practice and the women did not allow the men to participate. One of the Mullahs who admired the murder on TV also went to her funeral and to say prayers and to apologize for his mistake on the funeral but people on the funeral did not permit him to go near the funeral area and forced him to leave the cemetery immediately. After the funeral, it is a common practice that a Mullah should stand and say some prayers and to give some advice for the people who participated to encourage them to do good deeds but this time there was a woman who said to all men around the cemetery “shame on you guys” and she continued “As a woman, I am afraid of you all men and I hate you because it was you guys who did all this to her”. “She was innocent”.

Social media condemned the silence of the governmental authorities towards the issue and many people said bad words to president and his executive partner on the videos and uploaded the videos on Facebook. After hearing all those bad words, the authorities went to meet the victim’s family to express their condolences.

The parents of Farkhunda saw all these support from outside and inside of Afghanistan and dared to open their mouth and disclosed the issue of the police and said that police told them to say that their daughter was mentally ill while she wasn't. The head of Kabul police was under hard pressure for threatening a poor victim family.

The Shrine and the Street of the Shrine was named after Farkhunda and there were many theater and plays made on the issue by students from different countries.

But now she is almost forgotten.

The action and reaction of the people of Afghanistan are based on emotions and that is why all reactions to the serious incidents, crimes and injustice are temporary and will pass very soon without bringing fundamental systematic changes in the country.

The Kabul police have arrested about 21 people on this case, mostly by identifying them through the help of Facebook.

The security council of Afghanistan thought of banning Facebook in Afghanistan because it can destabilize Afghanistan at any time and it puts hard pressure on Afghan authorities but people already introduced some other applications which can help people open Facebook even if the government closes Facebook in Afghanistan.

Now there are politicians who are trying to release the criminals because they get money from their supporters or they want to use those criminals in their future politics for their own purpose.

The reactions of the people of Afghanistan are mainly individual and not systematic, without a good leadership and without specific targets. If all these efforts were coordinated and transferred into a chain of linked coordinated activities to achieve a specific goal or target, putting all the energies and emotions as well as resources spent all over the globe to condemn and demonstrate against this brutal act, if these activities were organized together as a single project for change, this could have changed everything in Afghanistan.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO PREVENT SUCH KIND OF ATTACKS IN FUTURE

Let’s conclude our lessons learnt from what happened to prevent other similar happenings in future:
  1. Freedom of religion and belief is a very necessary issue for Afghanistan, because it is a country with various religions and various sub-branches of religions and none-religious groups of people.
  2. Freedom of expression is also another necessary issue to a nation because of reforms and finding out the main bottleneck of the problems in a society, particularly for the evolution and development of literature in different fields.
  3. Any kind of religion should be subject to criticism for the development of its theories and philosophies. Criticism and protest against any religion should be protected and recognized as a legal basic human right for evolution of religious theories.
  4. Review, control, evaluation and improvement of all religious schools and institutions inside Afghanistan and improvement of their curriculum based on human rights and quality control measurements to balance between religious and science subjects at all levels with particular reference to need assessment of Afghanistan and its labor market for future human resources are the first priorities to be addressed.
  5. Extension of rule of law and access to justice and a fair judicial system for all the people of Afghanistan should be the priority of the reforms in judicial system in Afghanistan.
  6. Emphasizing on human rights educations at all levels from school to universities.
  7. Reforms in courts and bringing in new judgment system based on transparent, lawful and legal open court system where people can participate, see and learn the difference between accused, criminal and crimes and the relevant punishments for different crimes.
  8. Advocates and lawyers in Afghanistan should play an active role to make sure that the people of Afghanistan have access to corruption free courts and lawyers in a system in which they can trust that all criminals will be punished fair enough.
  9. Individual efforts and emotions such as demonstrations are good but not enough to bring effective changes.
  10. Only systematic and organized team work and group work can bring changes in Afghanistan.
  11. Temporary reactions to crimes and brutal murders are useless, you better think about the root of the problems in Afghanistan. To eradicate a problem, you should eradicate its roots.
  12. The quality of education in Afghanistan should improve to meet the needs of the country and to make sure the people understand that attacking on a defenseless person (girl) is a crime.
  13. Religious extremism should be eradicated from Afghanistan through reforms in religious schools and madras's; otherwise it will kill many other innocent people.
  14. Street hooligans are the biggest problem in Afghanistan.
  15. Vandalism should be dealt with in Afghanistan through systematic human resource management programs.
  16. Community education programs should be inaugurated in every district to increase the level of information of the mass about human rights and how to deal and behave with the accused, criminals and different thought and ideologies.
  17. Non-religious activities and free time activities’ management programs should be funded at the district level for the youth and adults to keep them busy in constructive activities rather than leaving them get involved in destructive criminal activities.
  18. The young generation in Afghanistan should know what a positive intervention is and what the things are which are none of their business and should not get involved. Most of the problems in Afghanistan begin with those who do not know their limits and what belongs to them and what does not concern them. The young generation in Afghanistan thinks that they are the only responsible person even for the style of clothing of ladies who walk on the streets. This kind of behavior creates problems at every single step.
  19. People should understand what the job of the police is. If people see that a person is burning a book on the street, irrelevant of the content of the book, why other people should get involved. It is the book of that person and he/she can do what he/she wants to do with his/her book. If anybody has an official claim against a person, they should call the police and they should complain of that behavior. People in Afghanistan should be taught to call the police of they see a crime or if they find something wrong or if they think that somebody is doing something wrong. No one has the right to attack on another person.
  20. People in Afghanistan should not think that foreign intervention in Afghanistan is a project against their religion and belief. They should not think that the government of Afghanistan is a branch of foreign intervention in Afghanistan. They should not think that the government has no intention to improve the situation of Afghanistan. The mistrust and distrust among the people and the government should be eradicated through effective and good governance.
  21. Literacy courses should be compulsory to all those who had no chance to go to school during the last 3 decades of war.
  22. All the people should be registered in their respective communities and their behavior should be recorded in a database to make sure that they are all doing well. A system like social security system can be a very useful model for Afghanistan to easily manage the human resources in the country.
  23. Those who kill people in the name of religion or in the name of saving an ideology, do they really know what does that ideology mean? Most of those who attacked Farkhunda can merely read or write or understand what is written in the Quran. Ideologies and religions are there to save people’s lives, not to take people’s lives. If you want to save an idea, you will save it for a living person; you can’t kill all the people to save a good ideology for them.

..............................................................................................................

Advising Afghan Refugees in Europe

Afghan refugee: Sir, I am an Afghan student in a Christian University. I am trying my best and I am very good in almost every class. I even have a support class for other classmates of mine in which I solve their problems and help them to learn better, but the biggest problem is that they always get better scores that mine. I never get the scores that I deserve, what should I do?

Afghan refugee counselor: Well that is a very typical problem here in Europe. What is your religion? Are you Hindu? Sikh? or Muslim?

Afghan refugee: I am a Muslim.

Afghan refugee counselor: Are you religious?

Afghan refugee: No, I am not a religious boy at all.

Afghan refugee counselor: How much will you pay me if I can solve this problem in a way that you will get even much more scores than what you deserve?

Afghan refugee: How much do you charge?

Afghan refugee counselor: It depends on the problems. Yours is a very difficult one. Do you hear the news on the media every day? And do you listen to what they say about Islam and all other bad news?

Afghan refugee: Yes, sir.

Afghan refugee counselor: That is a big issue. To solve those kinds of the issues, I will charge 1000 Euro, can you pay that much?

Afghan refugee: Yes sir, here you are? I will pay now but make sure if you can’t solve that issue, then I will ask the money back.

Afghan refugee counselor: No problem, you can even pay me the half of the money right now and keep the other half and pay if after your exam results.

Afghan refugee: Wow, you are the man. I like it. If you are so sure, then take all the money and tell me the solution.

Afghan refugee counselor: Tomorrow when you go to University, first go to the shop near your University and buy some chocolates there. Take the chocolates to the dean of your University.

Afghan refugee: You want me to bribe them?

Afghan refugee counselor: No wait and listen to me. When you take the chocolates to the office of the dean, smile and tell the dean that you have very good news for them. They will you that ask what news is.  Tell them that you have converted to Christianity. Put your right hand to your forehead, then to you left shoulder and then to the right and say Long Live Jesus who guided me to the right path.
Afghan refugee:  Do you think it will help?

Afghan refugee counselor: I am 100 % sure. Will receive 100 % in all your classes and when you get your diploma, then go to them with a long bear and your traditional clothes and tell them that sorry, I have a bad news, I have converted back to Islam because I don’t want to be like you guys and then leave the class saying Allah –o- Akbar which means God is great!

Afghan refugee: That is a very nice idea. Thank you very much for showing me such a nice and easy way.

Afghan refugee counselor: Go further and wish you success!

Biggest Problem in the Army of Afghanistan

A person has applied for job and wants to be a security guard for an NGO in Kabul – Afghanistan.

Director of NGO: Salam, how are you?

Applicant: Fine thanks, sir.

Director of NGO: I have read your CV in detail. It is quite impressive. You worked for the Army as an officer?

Applicant: Yes sir, I have the most relevant experience and even I am over qualified for a security guard.

Director of NGO: Yes. I was also thinking like that. Why are you applying for such a minor job when you had such a big position in the army and why did you leave.

Applicant: Sir, can I trust you? and would you believe me if I tell you the truth?

Director of NGO: Sure. It would be personal just between you and me. Tell me what is it?

Applicant: It is a nice job and I have a group of people working as a team under my command. But …
Director of NGO: But what?

Applicant: but the problem is that I can’t continue anymore?

Director of NGO: Why not? Are you afraid of the Taliban?

Applicant: This job is very dangerous. I fight the Taliban very well and I am not afraid of them. The salary is very low and I don’t have any kind of health insurance or other benefits. If I die or get injured and become a handicap, there are no salaries; there are no other benefits for my family so that they can survive after my death. I am sure that I will not get these things when I work with you, but I will get lower security risks. In my job, it is not the Taliban who kill us. I had many friends who were braver and stronger than me and they were doing a great job. They were all murdered from behind when they were fighting in the front line.

Director of NGO: What do you mean by that? Who killed them?

Applicant: I don’t know, sir. When we fight the Taliban very well, we get shot from behind in mysterious ways. I am not sure if it is an ethnic problem inside the army or it is a religious issue or some other problems. I just know that this kind of problem exists there and I don’t want to die the same way as my friends died. I think working with the Afghan Army right now means like joining the Army of Taliban to fight against their friends. If you can succeed to defeat their friends, they will kill you.

Director of NGO: Is there any other problem?

Applicant: Yes sir. The other problem is that when we go to their hidden places on the top of the mountains, they are highly equipped with the same guns and equipment that we have. Somebody gives them the same guns and I think only helicopters can equip them so nicely on the top of the mountains. Everything we get in the army here inside the city, they get the same things and even better and more than us on the top of the mountains. Our system and government fails to support us in the highly emergency and urgent cases but their supporters never fail even though their logistics is much more costly and difficult comparing to ours.

What is it that takes lives in Afghanistan?

If you take a closer look at the history of Afghanistan and in the reason of why people are brutally murdered in the country, then you will find out that 80 % of murdered happen because of the following reasons:

1.       Religion and belief (I am a true Muslim and you are not or you work with none Muslim troops. I am Sunni and I am a Muslim but Shiite’s are not Muslims).
2.       Racism (Pashtuns are real Afghans and only they have the right to rule, live and have the best of things).
3.       Politics (Other ethnic groups should not grow. It is a multiple faces of Pashtunism).
4.       Language superiority (Pashto should be the only official language).
5.       Wealth (who should get / rob the public property and the more money of the country).
6.       Lack of rule of law (people think there is no court and no law to punish the criminals and that is why they begin to punish themselves).
7.       Lack of education opportunities (people don’t know how to react to certain things they face and they cannot differentiate between what is a crime and what is not a crime).
8.       Foreign intervention (Muslims go to Afghanistan from other countries to save that land while they are being used by terrorist groups to kill innocent people).

These problems are the most common ones which take lives every day in Afghanistan and the solution to these problems are very easy. It needs a strong government led by a non-racist leader who can judge every one by the same law. The first step for that kind of a leader is to announce freedom of belief, expression and protect people who think differently. By announcing freedom of religion and belief and implementing it all over the country, people will understand that being NOT a Muslim is not a crime and all those who are Hindus and Sikhs have the same rights as other human beings in that country. The problem of Sunni and Shiite will also be solved.  The presence of the foreign troops in Afghanistan should go for a referendum to make it more acceptable for the rural and radical groups in Afghanistan. Then working with foreign troops for Afghan nationals inside Afghanistan should be legally announced by clerics as a legal and none crime activity to get the support of the mass population of Afghanistan.

Racism should be well defined and identified as a major crime. There should be rules to protect minorities and the quota system should be introduced to solve the issue of the protection of the rights of the minorities. First there should be an extensive consensus which can help identify the exact number of people in Afghanistan the refugees of that country outside Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has been rules by Pashtuns for centuries and all the time other ethnic groups have been somehow victims of their political behavior such as expansionism and claim of superiority and the claim of being the only real owners of the country. There should be precise laws and rules which can protect the rights of the individual particularly other ethnic groups who are the main victims.

Pashtuns should be given a chance to create multiple face pressure groups such as Nomads, Taliban, Hezbe Islami and democrats within the government to rule and fool other ethnic groups. The equality of all human kind in front of the law and the civilian rights should be the basic fundamental step to fight such wide-spread racism in that country.

Language superiority should be punished. It should be identified as the basic grounds for the discrimination and those who indulge in such kind of criminal acts should be punished accordingly. Everyone should have the right to choose a language in which he can communicate easily and understandable enough with others. All other languages of the country should receive development budgets and cultural activity funds released by the government.

Privatization should not lead to robbing or looting of the public properties by the ruling family. All the public properties should be transparently counted registered and should be made systematically available to the public by the use of technology. The government should be hold responsible for maintaining transparency and accountability for the public properties.

Expansion of rule of law to the most remote villages of Afghanistan is a must. Without rule of law all over the country, there is nothing possible. It requires extensive border management as well as other necessary tools such as strong management and team work.

Education opportunities should be equally available for all the children of Afghanistan regardless of their language, race, and color of skin or ethnic preferences. All sorts of discrimination should be removed and all sorts of barriers to access to education should be eradicated by the help of the local and civilian population support.

Foreign intervention in Afghanistan should be subject to a referendum and only that sort of a framework can bring legal and legitimate support of the local population towards foreign intervention in Afghanistan beginning from a small project in a village to the other high level issues concerning the future of Afghanistan and its population.

Integration Program

The third world war began in Europe. Thousands of the citizens of the European countries immigrated to other unknown destinations. Some of them died on the way due to the harsh situation and many of them sank in the sea because they could not survive swimming for many days before the rescue team arrived. A group of the European refugees who were previously working in the refugee camps got into a new unknown land called Jarre Khushk (Dried Valley). Jarre Khushk was an amazing country with millions of people and a very strange primitive culture and traditions. They were had no clothes on them only some kind of leather skirts were hiding there reproduction systems and breasts. They all had some kind of spears with them as their guns. When they found the refugees, they all took their spears ready in their hands as they wanted to attack them. They said something in a strange language that none of the refugees were able to understand. They all pushed them to sleep and when the refugees slept; they all tied their hands behind and took them to the leader of the land. The leader looked at them and their clothes carefully turning round each one once in a while and talked to other men in their own language and laughed. They talked to each other for a while and then one of them went out with a horse and brought another man who could speak a broken English language. The man said that they are asking you that who are you and why are you here in this country? What do you want? Do you want to fight?

The refugees told their stories and how they were suffering because of war and how they escaped the war and they got there. The commander ordered to put them in separate cells and give them enough food and water and let them integrate to our culture and tradition. Meanwhile all the people of this land can bring their questions and to ask from these new comers about why they are here and after they answer all the questions then we vote about their stay here in this land.

They brought them the first day food and it was fried cockroaches with a kind of sauce which looked like mayonnaise sauce. Nobody could eat that kind of food. They were all punished for disrespect to the culture of that land and they were warned to being sent out of that land if they don’t want to eat or drink or if they don’t want to integrate.

Next time they were given a very nice meal. It was nice pieces of meat baked enough for everybody and they enjoyed it.

The commander was very happy and asked the soldier to bring them out of the cells for a walk in the open air and teach them the some manners of the village. They all gave their hands for them kiss and asked them to learn how they greet. They all kissed their hands and then they went to walk in a garden where they saw the death bodies of many dogs. They asked why those dogs were dead. The man said that the commander has ordered to kill the best dongs of the village for you guys and I hope you all enjoyed it. They all started puking when they heard that. The man looked worried and said why are you doing that? The refugees said that they don’t eat dogs’ mean. The man was so surprised to hear that because he thought that the meat of the dog was the best food they could make for these new guests. The man said that please don’t say these kinds of things if our commander hears all these things, he will get offended and he will think that you very unfriendly person. He still doesn't know what to do with you guys and he may decide to kill you all of he thinks you are not integrating. They were all afraid to hear all these things and even though everything these people were doing was so strange and unacceptable for the people refugee but still they had to follow their culture and tradition. After a while they were well integrated in that society and could eat what they were eating and do what they were doing. They were now part of that society. It was very hard for them and they said that we did the same things to those refugees who came to our countries and if we get a second chance, we would do our best.

Why do some young boys go from Europe to support religious extremism or join the terrorist groups in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan?

The reason is very obvious and I think everyone knows that. The level of pressure on minority Muslim communities in European countries is very high, the hatred and deprivations from basic human rights and the way they are treated in these countries, are insane and inhuman. Some of the young generations of these families feel very insecure and feel themselves in the verge of dying. There are no opportunities for them to go and work and earn a living or join a university to study. What do you think they should do? They think they are marginalized and they are being attacked in every corner of life. They feel sympathy with those civilians of the Islamic countries which are in a political turmoil where hundreds of Muslim children, men and women are being murdered brutality in war. On the other hand, they have no information about the terrorist groups and their organizations, because they don’t believe the news they hear from media due to the high level of media bias. And what the media says and shows has a vise versa impact on some mentalities of the young generation in Europe who don’t feel themselves as part of the European society due to exposition to harsh discrimination, inequality and deprivation from access to basic human rights such as education and work.

Neocolonialism and military intervention in Islamic states give chances for the terrorist organizations to be able to attract and use the emotions of the young generations in Europe. They mainly target those generations who have never been to those countries and who have never seen the behavior and crimes of those terrorist groups and their organizations in the field of war so that they know how they commit murders and brutally commit massacres.  They are using religion as a motivation to attract new human resources (soldiers) while none of their actions are Islamic or logically acceptable for a true Muslim.

Once they fall in the trap of those organizations, then they can’t escape, even if they want to go back home and even if they manage to escape and return back, then they are no longer welcomed and appreciated back home in their host countries but rather being suspected and accused of many uncommitted crimes.

Now what the European countries can do to prevent such kind mistakes which take the lives of many Muslims and newly converted Muslims who join these groups?

It is very easy but needs a good management. “Treat the minority Muslim community in your respective countries the way that you want to be treated” the same as what a great Afghan quote says. Respect their religion and beliefs so that they can respect yours. They are mostly depressed, distressed and deprived refugee families in your countries.

First make a draft “codes of conducts” for those social workers who are in contact with them in your countries in which you write how the Muslim communities should be treated to prevent human rights violations against them when they are in the refugee camps, in the social houses or inside the community or when they are at school.

Then think about what they need? When a newly arrived refugee in your country is depressed and distressed refugee family, it is obvious that it is not the hatred, racism or discrimination or stupid comments about their beliefs, traditions or about their life style what they need. It is not integration courses as a priority what they need. It is good for European citizens to understand the real situation of a homeless refugee who has immigrated many countries on foot for many years to reach to your country; it is good to give him/her a peaceful life.

The language course is not the prior thing they need. The interview for asylum application with 200 questions and chances of failure which creates and intensifies their stress and tension and depression is not what they need. The refugee camp with racist social workers is not what they need. The racist doctors with an injection to end their lives are not what they need. The long term unemployment with no income is not what they need. A life with a negative answer to asylum application and sleeping in the park is not what they need. The free money is not what they appreciate. What they need is a welcome with a heart free from hatred, discrimination and a nice behavior based on human rights and chances to study or work. You should ask them what they want to do. Work? or study?

If they want to work, give them the opportunity to work with “on the job training” and if they want to study, ask them in which language, you can make a university with their own language by employing teachers from their own countrymen who can speak that language and give lessons in that language.  All other things can come as a second step priority for them and let them feel at home and let them identify violations of human rights with an open eye without feeling bad about their complaints.

The European universities give scholarships to many foreign students every year. But why don’t they give priority to those who are coming to your doors by themselves that you are spending lots of money bringing others here? The education strategies of the European countries should give priority to those who are already inside your country and then for others who are outside your borders.

Giving an opportunity for poor Muslim young generations to study what they want, and that will help them get rid of religious narrow mindedness and will also give them a feeling of gratefulness for the host country and that will make them try to do something good for that country.

By giving them the opportunity to work, the host countries will make them build their own self confidence and will allow them solve their financial problems and that will protect them and it will turn them into good tax payers for the host countries and it will also save them from harsh destructive and distressing poverty, which can force them at any time to join those terrorist groups.

If the host countries implement these instructions, I will guarantee that there will be no chances for radicalization or joining terrorist groups because the great Afghan proverb suggests that “Idleness is the evilness”.

How the terrorist groups can use religion to motivate or attract and deceive the young generation and those who have less knowledge about Islam and those who don’t know what that religion really teaches other people? There is the Islamic preaching terminology which can be easily used as a deceptive means to achieve political goals which happened in Afghanistan when America funded some projects in Afghanistan to fight against Russian soldiers and now the same discourse and techniques are being used by the Taliban to fight against foreign troops in Afghanistan. For example the word “Jihad” is an Arabic word which means to strive, to struggle, to try … but this word has been used in the history of Islam when it first appeared as a religion in the Arabic countries, other people saw this religion as something new and attacked those who were Muslims and the Muslim leaders gave them the permission to struggle and fight back if someone attacks their houses. Literally in this historical context it means “a defensive struggle to protect yourself from someone who attacked your house”. But now this word has a broader meaning and it can be used with anything like Jihad for gaining knowledge which means trying best to learn more knowledge. Terrorist groups are using this word to motivate and attract people to go and fight against foreign troops in Afghanistan. They say that foreign troops invaded an Islamic country and Muslim people need to protect these countries from military attacks. This idea looks a very acceptable reason for those who face many kinds of discrimination within European countries and they are disgraced, distressed and hopeless of a brighter future for themselves, and this will easily attract them while they do not have that much knowledge and analytic power to analyze the situation and differentiate between a real Jihad and that one of the terrorist groups for political purposes. If you are a person from Afghanistan, Syria is not your home. It is not invaded; it is not a real Jihad because two political parties are fighting with each other for power. It is none of your business to interfere. If you look at Afghanistan, Taliban are brutal terrorist groups who were and still are killing the Afghan people and foreign troops went there to help the people of Afghanistan to fight against them and get rid of them. If you look at Iraq and what those terrorist groups are doing there, it is not acceptable for any Muslim and their behaviors are not Islamic and no one should take part in that kind of brutality and murder of civilian unarmed people in those countries.

Cultural Clash

People tend to remember God and his mercy in the time of distress particularly when they face problem, stress and disappointments. The Afghan refugees in Europe are living a life similar of the one in the hell because of different kinds of discrimination, financial sanctions and racism. Their level of depression is the highest and they live in a trauma even without knowing about it. Some of them can’t survive that situation and they kill themselves and it does not come on the media due to the media bias. When you look at their faces in the refugee camps, even their faces do not have the normal color and it makes you remind the faces of those Afghan hostages caught by the Taliban. In the normal circumstances when you look their faces, it is usually red and tan but when they are afraid of something that color turns into pale and shows a whiter face without blood circulation in the skin. I had seen so many of those frightened faces during the war in Afghanistan many years before, but it was usually temporary like for one week or so when the rocket was fired inside the house of a neighbor.

But in Europe, it is not temporary because there is no hope that the situation will change for Afghan refugees in the near future, because the situation of the refugees are dependent on the mentality of the people of the host countries. If the mentalities of the people of the host country do not change positively towards the immigration, the situation would never change. To change the mentality of the people of the host countries, the media and the education system can play a better role. They should have cultural diversity programs and they need start working for freedom of religion and belief as well as freedom of expression in order to eradicate racism and discrimination in the host countries.
When you go to refugee camps, you will find Afghan refugees rising in the number even more than Iraqis and Syrians who also escaped the same war in their respective countries.

Even those who were not religious in Afghanistan will tend to remember God and pray for their situation and ask God to help them in finding a better life or for surviving the harsh discrimination of the environment which is not always very friendly but sometimes harsh and hostile.

In Afghanistan when Muslim people pray for a death person but not the Hindus and Sikhs, they organize a religious ceremony and cook lots of good food and invite people to read all pages of Quran in one day which is called “Khatme Quran”, a hard work for a single person to do, that’s why they have to invite so many people so that everyone can read some chapters to get the job done so that the recompense will go to the death person and he shall be blessed in the other world. They have to pray in Arabic because the religion comes with an Arabic language and they don’t know and they don’t speak that language, so when they need to pray, they have to read some pages of the Holy Book Quran which is written in Arabic with the same alphabet as the language of the people of Afghanistan. Some of them read the translation in Dari if they have got a little bit of education at school and know how to read Dari. Some people can’t read and write but feel shy to say that they can’t read. They take some pages and move their lips and make some noises to show and pretend as if they are reading it with themselves. Most people don’t know what they read and what does those lines in Arabic mean due to the high rate of illiteracy in the country as an impact of the war in Afghanistan. But they are sure for one thing, and that is that reading Quran has “Sawaab” which means “recompense” and it is a good thing and God likes those who read Quran and he will pay them back in some ways in this world or in the next.

I was invited to a refugee camp run by the Red Cross where Afghan refugees including men, women and children were afraid of the uncertain future of their asylum application. They brought an electronic kettle from a hidden cupboard and asked another Afghan boy to watch outside so that the social workers of camp should not arrive suddenly to catch them while boiling water and making some green tea for their guest. I asked them why were they hiding their teapot and glasses? “Alcohol drinking was a crime in Afghanistan and you escaped that situation and came to Europe and now here drinking tea is a crime or what?” I told them.

“No, they made some kind of stupid rules and regulations here for us that we don’t have to make tea or cook our own food in this camp because they want us to eat and drink what they give us. We don’t really know whether what they give us is Hallaal (allowed in Islam) or Harraam (forbidden in Islam) but we have to eat and drink what they give us in order to survive. They give us tea and water only three times a day, but we don’t drink black tea, we make our own green tea here” answered one of the guys in that camp and continued “there are many Afghan refugees here who lived here for more than 8 years without a positive answer from their asylum application and they are depressed and almost lost their senses and they are now kind of crazy saying irrelevant things and sometimes crying and sometimes laughing, may Allah help us all, I think we came to the wrong place” he said.

“Allah doesn’t work here” shouted the other guy. “Here is the territory of the Jesus and only he can save us from his own followers” smiled the guy and all others laughed.

“Gandhi was so right about the Christians when he said that he loves Jesus the Christ but his followers are so unlike to him” another boy who seemed to be more educated than others quoted Gandhi.

“He is right” shouted the other guy. “Tell him the story of Fahim and what happened to him and his friends” he suggested pouring some warm green tea for me in a partly broken glass of his own. “This glass is barakati (blessed)” he told me pointing at his own glass. It has traveled with me many countries and that is why I love it a lot.

“Fahim and all his other four friends who were living in different refugee camps had undergone unwanted belly operations in the same way when they wanted to make an appointment for a dentist, for a disinfection of an injury or went to hospital because of health checkups” said one of the guys in the refugee camp “and they all are complaining of the same bellyache now” said the boy. “They think that this is a hostile attack on Afghan Muslim refugees who are living in the camps and warns everyone else to be careful about such kind of unwanted operations” continued the boy.

One of the guys came in and asked everybody to join a praying for a better situation of Afghan refugees organized by an Afghan refugee in the other room. We all went to the other refugee room and the guy borrowed from a mosque a whole Quran printed in separated chapters for everyone to read so that Allah will recompense the good deed and improve the situation of Afghan refugees. First he asked everybody if they could read and then he distributed the chapters to everyone and all started to read the chapters to complete the reading of the whole book in an hour or so. The social workers of the camp suddenly appeared and started shouting at all the Afghan refugees and asked them to get out of the room immediately. They also collected the electronic kettles and warned everybody of reporting such things to the immigration office and they will all receive negative responses to their asylum applications. The Afghan refugees stood against this action and they all came out of the room and shouted “Freedom of Religion” and “Freedom of Religion and belief is a basic human right”. The social workers of the camp said we are not going to allow such kind of religious things under the Red Cross and we will punish the organizer of this gathering. I asked all the Afghan guys to go to their rooms without further reactions. Later they sent a warning later of everybody and changed the organizer to a closed camp as a punishment.
